Deadly Sins Part I: Sloth

We’ll be running a series on the 7 deadly sins in your relationship, here is part I: Sloth

SLOTH is defined as “apathy and inactivity in the practice of virtue” or “the way you probably lived as a bachelor”. It’s that feeling that sees you eating a can of beans because the grocery store a block away might as well be on the other side of the world. It’s the suggestion that video games are equivalent to exercise because at least you’re moving your thumbs. It’s what turns you into a real-life McGyver, manufacturing elaborate makeshift tools to reach something of value on the other side of the couch. And it might just what’s turning your girlfriend off.

Signs and Symptoms

  • She wants to go out and have fun, you’d prefer to stay in because it means you don’t have to put on pants.
  • On your anniversary, you get her chocolate, she gets you a membership to the gym.
  • When other milestones roll around, you either forget or put everything off until the last minute, handing her something you cobbled together from whatever was in your the back seat of the car.

If you’re the type who’s begun to eschew date nights and exercise for ordering-in and extended sofa-sitting, it’s time to get it together and get out—you might even be able to kill two birds with one stone by taking your girl out for something more active. We’ve got a few suggestions for how you can combine getting fit with making your girlfriend happy!

A picnic and a bike ride.

Grab a basket, fill it with some healthy snacks and head out to the park for a picnic with your girl on the grass. Soak up the sun for a leisurely lunch and then hit your city’s cycling trails. Bonus romance points if you’ve got a bicycle built for two.

Double-date and doubles tennis.

Sometimes you might need that extra motivation to get out and pairing up with another couple could be the answer. You two can team up on the tennis court and exercise your serving supremacy over the rival couple. There’s nothing like the thrill of victory to bring you and your girl closer—and if you don’t win, there’s also nothing like badmouthing the other two behind their backs in a post-game wrap-up.

The old standby, dinner and dancing.

If you’re not feeling quite so adventurous yet, just make some reservations at her favourite restaurant, enjoy an evening of good food and good wine and then burn off the calories by dancing the night away.
